Lady Gaga has released her new single Born This Way to critical acclaim and no small amount of controversy.
Elton John has deemed it “the anthem that’s going to obliterate I Will Survive” and the tune is sure to be playing in every gay club, worldwide, within no time.
Including such lyrics as “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen” and “No matter gay, straight or bi/ Lesbian, transgendered life/ I’m on the right track, baby”, Gaga obviously has no qualms in putting her opinions out there. Such explicit reference to LGBT lifestyles, and by such a mainstream artist, carries an unashamedly gay message, and an enduringly positive one, that is sure to reach the ears of millions.
Gaga has received criticism from some quarters for emulating the style of Madonna in such an obvious way – the tune does smack strongly of some of Madge’s mid-80s offerings – but it is undeniably effective, mixing hard hitting lyrics with a catchy tune.
“Born This Way” is the first single from the album of the same name.
