American lawyer James Paul Oetken was yesterday confirmed as the first openly gay man to be granted the position of federal judge after an 80-13 vote in his favour.
In a news release published by The Advocate, Senator Charles Schumer of New York said: “As the first openly gay man to be confirmed as a federal judge, Paul Oetken is living proof that it really does get better.”Senator Schumer has also recommended lesbian Alison Nathan for a judgeship in the Southern district of New York. She is currently awaiting a vote.
