Facebook_Heart_21Facebook has added ‘In a civil union’ and ‘In a domestic partnership’ to its choice of relationship statuses.

The gesture has been cheered by gay rights group, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

GLAAD president, Jarrett Barrios, wrote in a statement, “By acknowledging the relationships of countless loving and committed same-sex couples in the US and abroad, Facebook has set a new standard of inclusion for social media”.

The change was the result of a push by GLAAD and several other gay rights groups, who met with the social networking company to discuss it.

The new relationship statuses are available to Facebook users in The US, Canada, the UK, France and Australia.
