In a  great win for mainstream LGBT cinema, Hollywood stars Ellen Page and Kate Mara are uniting for Mercy, written by Joe Barton and directed by Israeli filmmaker Tali Shalom-Ezer.

Page is portraying Lucy, the daughter of a man on death row falling in love with Mara’s Mercy character, a woman on the opposing side of her family’s political cause. As a result, Lucy’s value for truth is tested as her world begins to unravel.

Mara starred in Fantastic Four, Captive and The Martian last year. She also received an Emmy nomination for her role in House of Cards.

Ezer made her feature film directorial debut with the acclaimed Princess, which was made in Israel and won three awards at the Jerusalem Film Festival.

Openly gay actress Page has long been working to increase LGBT visibility in the media. Her show Gaycation sees Page travel around the world with her best friend, Ian Daniel, to visit LGBT communities. The show is nominated for an Emmy in the “Best Unstructured Reality Series” category.

Mercy is set to start shooting in Cincinnati next month. Let’s hope both characters survive this romantic drama.
