parentssmallA civil liberties group called The American Civil Liberties Union is fighting a ban on second parent adoption in North Carolina.

The ACLU filed a lawsuit against the state of North Carolina in U.S. District Court in Greensboro on Wednesday, challenging the ban on second parent adoptions in the state on behalf of six pairs of lesbian and gay parents.

They want  a federal judge to rule that the law violates the parents’ constitutional rights and to order that the state stop enforcing the prohibition of second-parent adoptions.

A second-parent adoption occurs when one partner in an unmarried couple adopts the other partner’s biological or adoptive child. Second parent adoption was legalised for same-sex couples in 200 in the UK. Second parent adoption is currently legal in 11 states and the district of Columbia.

The ACLU are collecting signatures on an online petition which can be found here.
