Gay couples in Illinois, USA, had cause for celebration today after the state’s governor signed same-sex civil partnerships into law.
Illinois boasts one of the biggest LGBT populations in America.
These civil unions do not grant couples the same rights they would enjoy within an opposite-sex marriage, and are not recognised under federal law.
However, campaigners welcomed the legalisation of such unions as a step in the right direction.
