A Catholic boys’ school has withdrawn its permission to be used as a location to shoot LGBT rights film, Freeheld, starring Ellen Page and Julianne Moore.
Salesian High School in New Rochelle, New York, was to be used as the town hall in the film. Based on a true story, Freeheld sees Moore play Laurel Hester, a terminally ill police veteran who made headlines with her fight for the right to have her pension transferred to her partner, Stacie Andree, played by Page.
According to producer, Michael Shamberg, the school originally approved the shoot, but later withdrew it based on the “subject matter” of the film.
Shamberg claims he has written to the school principle, John Flaherty, explaining that the film is “not about gay marriage, nor are the women attempting to get married. It is about recognising the dignity of a woman who was a brave civil servant”, but has heard nothing back.
