australiaflagAustralia’s Labor party has voted to endorse gay marriage at their annual party conference, a change to its original position on the issue.

However, the vote will have little impact on the on the chance of gay marriage becoming legal.  The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, whose personal opinion is that marriage should be between a man and a woman, will allow a vote of conscience on bills attempting to legalise same-sex marriage.  This means legislators can vote on the issue according to their personal beliefs, and not in line with the Labor party’s official position or majority, which means any proposal to legalise gay marriage will face a difficult battle.
