The female partner of Australian Finance Minister Penny Wong has fallen pregnant after IVF treatment.
Sophie Allouaches is due to give birth in mid-December.
The announcement has reignited political debates about same-sex marriage and gay parenthood.
Upper house Christian Democrat MP Fred Nile has lambasted the couple for their decision to have a child.
Wong told The Canberra Times: “Like any expecting parents, the prospect of welcoming this child into our lives fills us both with joy,” she said.
“We are extremely grateful to our IVF service and staff, and to our donor, for giving us the opportunity to raise a child together.
“The biological father of the child is known to us, and will be known to the child.”
