library_of_congressAn American who claims he was fired from Washington’s Library of Congress for being gay is having his case reviewed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission- a government agency that enforces anti-discrimination laws.

Peter TerVeer, 30, has filed a complaint against his supervisor, who allegedly fired him after he came out.

Mr TerVeer worked in the Inspector General’s office as a management analst for four years until he was fired last week.

He said that the supervisor in question created a “hostile work environment”, and sent him emails about his sexuality.

Fox news reported the contents of one email as “Peter, putting you and [another employee] closer to God is my effort to encourage you to save your worldly behinds!!!”

Another email reportedly said: “[Jesus] prohibited sexual immorality including homosexuality…”

The Library of Congress confirmed that TerVeer is no longer their employee but declined to comment on the claims of discrimination put to them.

The Library of Congress introduced a policy banning discrimination on the grounds of sexuality in the 1990s. The Huffington Post reports that it has not yet been confirmed whether this policy still stands.
