mosqueA mosque whose religious leaders were filmed allegedly preaching against homosexuals and non-Muslims is opening a private school, the Daily Mail reports.

Fees at the Birmingham-based school will cost £3,500 a year with pupils being expected to wear traditional Pakistani uniforms and memorise the Koran.

On top of following the national GCSE curriculum which includes subjects such as science and history, Arabic will be taught to the 20 students aged 11 to 16 educated at Green Lane Masjid Independent Boys School.

The school will be based in a refurbished £1.5 million two-storey building next to the mosque in Small Heath.

In a 2008 Channel 4 TV documentary called “Undercover Mosque” Islamic scholars at Green Lane Masjid were allegedly preaching against homosexuals and non-Muslims.

West Midlands Police reported the TV channel to regulator Ofcom for misrepresenting the preachers, but the complaint was rejected and the police were forced to make an apology.

Ifaan Raze, the spokesman for Green Lanes Masjid, told the Daily Mail: “We will be treating the students as young adults and expose them to a variety of opinions, and it is up to them to make up their own minds as to what is right or wrong in the eyes of Islam.”

The school would welcome applications from children of different faiths, he added.
