Same-sex marriage has just been made legal across all 50 of the United States after a historic supreme court ruling that declared attempts by conservative states to ban marriage for same-sex couples as unconstitutional.

The decision was made with five of the nine court justices ruling that the right to marriage equality was covered by the 14th amendment, in what is sure to become one of the most important civil rights cases in LGBT history – Obergefell v Hodges.

Speaking from the White House after calling one of the plaintiffs, Barack Obama said: “This ruling is a victory for America. This decision affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts: when all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free.”

There are 28 states in the USA that still don’t offer civil rights protections against discrimination based on sexuality.
