ABC television network have refused to show a trailer for the film Carol unless a non-explicit nudity scene suggesting sex between the two lead female characters is edited out.

Based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price Of Salt, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara star in the 1950s film, which sees a young photographer become enchanted by an older woman and the sacrifices the two must make in order to be together.

According to Page Six news, the distributors of the movie – which has been nominated for 100 industry awards this year – are said to be considering “making adjustments to fit network TV execs’ requests”.

The advert for the critically acclaimed film had been scheduled to be shown during the Super Bowl commercial break on 7 February, in a bid to boost box office profits.
