A gay couple who held hands in a Sainsbury’s store have expressed their anger after a security guard told them they were acting inappropriately.
Thomas Rees and Joshua Bradwell were visiting their local branch in Hackney, London when a security guard approached them to say a customer had complained about their behaviour.
The security staff asked them to follow him outside and explained that a female shopper had complained they were touching and behaving inappropriately.
Mr Rees said he was left ‘stunned and shaking’ by the incident, and said Sainsbury’s should ensure its staff are fully trained in diversity.
He told the BBC: “I have nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about. I shouldn’t be removed from the store.”
The supermarket chain apologised and offered them a £10 voucher.
A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said: “We sincerely apologise to Thomas and Josh.
“We are an inclusive retailer and employer and do not tolerate discrimination in our stores.
“We will take appropriate action once we’ve concluded our investigation with our security contractor.”
