The Spice Girls star and awards host chats with our editor in an exclusive gay press interview.

The British LGBT Awards, at London’s Grand Connaught Rooms, is designed to showcase individuals and organisations that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the LGBT community.

AJ: What was your first thought when you received the call to host the British LGBT Awards?

MEL: It is an amazing event and I was proud to be asked to get involved. I am looking forward to it. The LGBT community has always been supportive of The Spice Girls and me so I was always going to say yes!

AJ: Do you think events such as the British LGBT Awards are relevant today?

MEL: Yes! It is very important to shine a light on LGBT role models and highlight the work they are doing to promote equality and diversity. It is also great to see the ‘straight allies’ recognised for their work too.

AJ: Is it important to have visible role models from all walks of life?

MEL: Absolutely. What I like about the British LGBT Awards is that ‘straight allies’ are recognised too. It is great to see people like Kim Cattrall, Brian May and Danny Dyer nominated. Some of the names on the shortlist this year are incredible!

AJ: I can’t not mention the Spice Girls. Just five girls having fun that became so much more than that. A symbol of female empowerment. Are you proud of that time?

MEL: I’m proud of everything the Spice Girls achieved.

AJ: Your best memories of that time?

MEL: Making music that our fans enjoyed and having so much fun at the same time!

AJ: As part of a group of girls who worked and grew together, do you miss that close relationship?

MEL: We’re all still in touch. I’ve been in London promoting the British LGBT Awards this week so I’ve had the chance to catch up with Emma and Geri. We all had a cup of tea together yesterday!

AJ: Are you still making music?

MEL: I’m always thinking of new ideas and writing.

AJ: You’ve been very successful working as a judge on America’s Got Talent. Given how honest you are, has that been a challenge?

MEL: It is important to be honest with people and give practical advice. I hope I’ve helped people along the way. It is a wonderful show to be part of.

AJ: What project are you currently working on?

MEL: Apart from the British LGBT Awards, I’ll be doing more Lip Sync Battle later this year.

AJ: You are very much into your fitness. Does that help focus you?

MEL: Yes, I get into the gym most days and running helps me unwind.

AJ: Where do you call home?

MEL: LA has been my home for years now and I’m very happy there. We’re very settled.

We are looking forward to catching up with Mel on the red carpet tonight…
