Welsh_ConservativesThe entire Welsh Conservative group were among 134 Tory MPs who voted against legislation to introduce gay marriage in the UK.

The prime minister and leading cabinet ministers had championed allowing same-sex couples to marry but just 126 Tory MPs backed the change in the free vote.

Most MPs in the House of Commons supported the legislation, which will now go to the next stage of becoming a law, but the scale of hostility in the Conservative party is now laid bare.

Among the 175 who objected where North Wales Tories Guto Bebb (Aberconwy) and David Jones (Clwyd West).

Last night sleep artist Lee Hadwin from Denbigh, who has been with his partner Clint for 14 years, said: “I am a gay person who was brought up as a Christian and I personally have never really been bothered about having a civil partnership or marriage but I think this is fantastic news for gay couples to be able to have that choice.

“Since women were granted the right to vote all those years ago, times have changed dramatically – marriage is not just about having children, it is about two people, be they gay, straight or bisexual, sealing their love.

“Unfortunately David Jones and Guto Bebb have made it perfectly clear with their vote in parliament that as fellow human beings do not hold the same values as most of us do here in Wales.

“There are far more important things for MPs to be discussing but instead they are bickering over this. I find it all very narrow-minded and hypocritical: no one has the right to say whether two people can get married or not, least of all politicians.”
