This month, the UK Parliament will be celebrating LGBT+ History Month with a wide programme of events promoting equality and diversity across the Parliamentary Estate. With the largest number of MPs who identify as LGBT+, the UK Parliament has recently been labelled ‘gayest parliament in the world’ – however the House of Commons commitment to equality goes further than just its diversity of elected members.

Lending his support to the LGBT+ Community, Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle said ”The House of Commons is dedicated to being a welcoming and supportive workplace for all LGBT+ staff. We also recognise that Parliament has a duty to lead on equality and be open, therefore many of our events are for the public to enjoy, including LGBT+ History Tours and an open art exhibition.”

The Speaker of the House of Lords, known as The Lord Speaker, Lord Fowler, said: “It is great news that the UK Parliament has achieved a spot on the top 100 list on the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index. I have been a longstanding champion of LGBT+ equality and this result demonstrates the inclusive culture and practises we are developing within the House of Lords. I hope that we build on this momentum and take further strides to become even better champions for LGBT+ members and colleagues in the future.”

The Palace of Westminster’s workplace equality network ParliOUT are putting on a number of events to celebrate  LGBT+ staff and engage with important issues, including a lunchtime conversation with the HIV charity Terrance Higgins Trust and a series of films which focus on three individuals who share their experiences of how legislation passed by the UK Parliament has affected their lives.
