Pope_BenedictIn his annual ‘State of the World’ address, given on Monday, Pope Benedict XVI said gay marriage undermines the family and “threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself” in his strongest statement against it so far, reported Reuters.

Giving the address to an audience of Vatican diplomats from 180 countries, the pontiff, 84, said “Pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and woman.”

Before being elevated to Pope, Benedict had been one of the leading anti-gay voices within the Catholic Church.
