MollieOlginTwo teenage girls have been found shot in the head in Portland, Texas, in what could be a targeted gay hate crime.

Mollie Olgin, 19, and Mary Christine Chapa, 18, were found with shot wounds to the heat in knee-deep grass in a Portland park on Saturday morning. Olgin died from her wounds and Chapa is described as being in a stable condition in hospital after undergoing emergency surgery, according to the Caller Times.

Portland Police Chief Randy Wright, who is investigating the attacks, told kristv.com, “This particular case, it does have some of the earmarks of a targeted attack. We’ll know more about that as we go forward in the investigation.” Police have not ruled out the girls’ sexuality as a possible motive.

Olgin and Chapa had been in a relationship for five months. A couple found the girls in the nature area – 25 foot below a scenic viewing deck – on Saturday morning. A resident in the area heard two loud bangs just before midnight on Friday, which they believed to be firecrackers, reported the Corpus Christi Caller Times.

Olgin’s roommate Samantha Garrett told kristv.com that “the fun-loving couple hadn’t gotten any negative response to their relationship and could not think of why anyone would want to harm them.”

Chapa is now able to communicate and help authorities with the murder investigation.
