targetUS retail giant Target is suing a San Diego gay rights group for demonstrating outside its stores.

Target have accused Canvass For A Cause, who campaign for gay marriage, of driving away their customers by displaying “angry and aggressive” behaviour in their protests.

Target has already been scrutinized by the LGBT community for donating money to anti-gay political groups. Lady Gaga recently walked away from an exclusive deal with the retailer, over their apparent anti-gay stance.

Last year Target donated $150,000 to Minnesota Forward, who used the money to support the gubernatorial campaign of anti-gay rights Republican Tom Emmer.

A Target representative told the Associated Press, “Our legal action was in no way related to the cause of the organization and was done so to be consistent with our long-standing policy of providing a distraction-free shopping experience by not permitting solicitors at our stores”.

But Bryan Pease, the lawyer representing CFAC, said that municipal code exempts the free speech activity of canvassers from the “prohibition against trespassing in areas that are open to the public.”

Pease also commented that CFAC employees are trained “never to follow people or get in anyone’s way”.

CFAC executive director Tres Watson said, “It’s very David vs. Goliath. We understand they’re the Goliath in the room. They’ve got all money in world to get us to stop talking about gay marriage.”
