A study conducted by the University of California has found that nine million Americans identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
This figure puts the percentage of LGBTs in America at 3.5% – well below the 10% suggested by previous studies.
The study was completed using the results of nine surveys conducted over the past seven years.
It also found that around 8.2% of Americans said they had engaged in same-sex sexual activity and 11% had experience some level of same-sex attraction.
