Stonewall_Equality_WalkStonewall’s biggest Equality Walk in Brighton on 6 May raised over £65,000 for the charity’s Education for All Campaign, which helps schools tackle homophobic bullying. Nearly 600 supporters took part in the record-breaking 10k Walk, which was opened by John and Sally Bercow and hosted by TOWIE star Harry Derbidge and Casualty actor Jane Hazlegrove.  As Mr Bercow cut the starting line ribbon, he said: ‘Thank you to Stonewall, who must be regarded as one of the most successful campaigns in British political history.’

This year’s Walk was supported by American Express and Square Peg Media. The Top Team prize went to PricewaterhouseCoopers, who raised over £7,000. Other Walkers included the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Anne Meadows, and local MPs Caroline Lucas and Simon Kirby.

Stonewall Director of Fundraising Catherine Bosworth said: ‘We’re absolutely delighted that the chilly weather didn’t dampen people’s spirits. This hugely successful Walk – our biggest ever – will help us continue our efforts to stamp out homophobic bullying. It should be a strong reminder that many people support our fight to secure a brighter future for Britain’s lesbian, gay and bisexual young people.’

Stonewall will use the £65,000 raised to support its work in Britain’s primary and secondary schools. YouGov research for Stonewall shows that homophobia is endemic in Britain’s schools; nine in ten secondary school teachers and more than two in five primary school teachers say children and young people, regardless of their sexual orientation, currently experience homophobic bullying, name calling or harassment in their schools.
