Stephen Fry, who was one of the first celebrities to champion Twitter, has deleted his account in the wake of his controversial comments during Sunday night’s Bafta awards.
Fry, a prolific Twitter user, has been named among its most influential users, and boasted followers numbering in their millions. But as of Monday morning he appeared to have removed himself from the site.
After costume desginer Jenny Beaven accepted her BAFTA for her work on Mad Max: Fury Road, Fry remarked: ‘Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to the awards ceremony dressed like a bag lady.’
Twitter users soon demanded Fry apologise for his choice of joke.
He said online afterwards Beavan was “a dear friend” who had “got” the joke and underlined the point by posting a photo of the pair at the Bafta after-party.
‘So just a word to the tragic figures who think calling Jenny Bevan a bag lady was an insult. She’s a dear friend and she got it. Derrr,’ he tweeted later.
Comedian Matt Lucas joked: “Stephen Fry Didn’t you get the memo? No-one is allowed to do jokes anymore.”
Fry has been presenting the show for 11 years and audiences have become used to his risque quips about many of the stars involved.
Following the outburst, he deleted his account.
Outnews Global has approached Stephen Fry’s office for a comment but is yet to receive a reply.
