boy-scouts-of-americaA lesbian mother from Ohio who was ousted as a den leader from her son’s Boy Scouts group for being gay, says that she was reluctant to have her son join the Boy Scouts initially because of the organisation’s anti-gay policy, but was told “there would be no problems.”

Former den mother, Jennifer Tyrrell, has now collected more than 126,000 signatures for a petition on Change.org that urges the Boy Scouts of America to end their policy banning gay youth and den leaders.

She has even received support from Hollywaood stars, with “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson along with TV stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson from ABC’s hit sitcom “Modern Family” and Max Adler from Fox’s “Glee” all signing the petition and lending their support at the American GLAAD awards. “I feel as though I’m right in this, and I feel one day they’ll realise that,” Tyrrell told the Daily News.

“Hopefully, with the amount of signatures we’ve collected in less than a week, we’ll send a huge statement to the Boy Scouts of America — that people are ready for a change.”

Tyrrell had served as a volunteer den mother for a year until she was forcibly removed from that role two weeks ago after the group’s local district council learned she’s gay, she said.

The Boy Scouts of America has previously defended its policy as a First Amendment privilege, and the Supreme Court agreed with that argument in 2000.
