Silvano Vincenti says the model used by Leonardo DaVinci for his infamous Mona Lisa painting may be Gian Giacomo Caprotti – aka Salai – an apprentice and, most art historians agree, probably also a lover of DaVinci’s. DaVinci is said to have conducted relationships with a number of his male apprentices and mentors.

Previous theories about the identity of the model have included DaVinci’s mother, a local prostitute or even a self-portrait.
