canadianflagsmallCanadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has launched a new project to support refugees who are persecuted for their sexual orientation.

The Rainbow Refugee Committee will be providing $100,000 of financial support to LGBT refugees coming into Canada.

The executive director of Eagle Canada, the country’s largest LGBT human rights organisation, Helen Kennedy said, “These funds are a welcome first step in response to the crisis facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people around the globe, at a time when 77 countries continue to criminalize homosexuality and five prescribe the death penalty”.

The project also plans to provide gay refugees, during their three month sponsorship period, with all of their basic needs, like accommodation, food and clothing.

Canada is known as a world leader in refugee protection. Since the creation of the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program thirty years ago, Canadians have sponsored over 200,000 refugees.
