The reveal is a big deal in terms of representation, especially considering Tracer’s popularity and visibility.
Published by Blizzard the 10-page comic serves as a “Happy Holidays” message from the Overwatch development team.
In the latest issue , a festive story called Reflections, ‘lead’ character is Tracer on a mad dash around London to grab a Christmas present. The 12-page comic, written by Overwatch lead writer Michael Chu, then sees Tracer return home. Waiting for her is partner, Emily, and the pair share a kiss over the gift.
Many gamers on Twitter have welcomed the surprise.
However it’s unavailable in Russia with a message reading “in accordance with Russian law we cannot share this comic”.
Blizzard has mentioned previously that at least one of Overwatch‘s roster is LGBT.
“We definitely haven’t forgotten about what we said,” Chu said to Mic. “It’s very important for us to have diversity and inclusiveness of all types, and that includes LGBT characters.”
Overwatch is available now on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Read the official holiday comic on Blizzard’s website.
