whitehouseThe Obama administration has released a statement criticising proposals to ban gay marriage in Minnesota.

However, the tentatively worded message does not express full support for marriage equality.

Whitehouse spokesman Shin Inouye told the Washington Blade, “The President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same sex couples or to take such rights away.”

He continued: “While he believes this is an issue best addressed by the states, he also believes that committed gay couples should have the same rights and responsibilities afforded to any married couple in this country.”

Last year Obama called his stance on gay marriage “evolving” and said it was something he continued to wrestle with.

Minnesota voters will decide in 2012 whether a constitutional ban is needed after the House and Senate approved a bill.

The state already disallows gay marriage but opponents are calling for the law to be re-enforced.

Both campaigns are likely to spend millions of dollars battling their corners.
