The shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year has been announced and it features LGBT athletes.

Nicola Adams and Kate Richardson-Walsh are among the 16 nominees for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016.

Bisexual boxer and former DIVA cover star Nicola is the proud holder of a “grand slam” of prestigious titles: Olympics, World Championships, European Games and Commonwealth Games. She won her second back-to-back Olympic gold medal at Rio, after becoming the first female fighter to win boxing gold at London 2012. It’s safe to say that Nicola is no stranger to glory. In addition to her long list of trophies, she topped the DIVA Power List this year.

Also in the running is hockey player Kate Richardson-Walsh. Team captain Kate made history at Rio by leading the team to their first ever Olympic victory. Among her teammates was her wife, Helen. Together they were the first same-sex married couple to win Olympic gold together.

Kate took to Twitter to express her feelings about being nominated:

“Unbelievably honoured to be on @BBCSPOTY shortlist representing @GBHockey & @EnglandHockey squads, staff & the one and only hockey family!”

You can find out how to vote online here and buy tickets for the live awards ceremony here.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016 will broadcast live on BBC 1 on Sunday 28 December.

Nicola and Kate, we’re rooting for you!
