NareldaJacobs2012Australian newsreader Narelda Jacobs has likened the same-sex marriage debate to the racial stigmatization faced by the country’s interracial couples a decade ago.

Jacobs, 36, is both the first openly gay newsreader and the first Aboriginal woman to anchor a commercial TV program in Australia.

She said: “My mum is English-Irish and my dad is Aboriginal and even for her family at the time, it was a major issue to have an interracial marriage.”

“So I’m just hoping that in years to come it’s going to be looked upon like that, just as people will now say, ‘I can’t believe people had an issue with a white woman marrying a black man’.
