Starting gun fired on NZ’s latest LGBTI initiative
The shortlists for the inaugural New Zealand LGBTI Awards have been announced, with companies including Amazon, Absolut and Air New Zealand leading the charge to pick up the coveted gongs for their work promoting LGBTI equality and inclusion.
Taking place at The Cordis in Auckland on 29th November, the Awards are the brainchild of Silke Bader (Australian LGBTI Awards’ co-founder, LOTL Magazine) and Linda Riley (British LGBT Awards’ co-founder, Australian LGBTI Awards’ co-founder, DIVA Magazine). The NZ LGBTI Awards will highlight those companies, individuals and community groups who go the extra mile in working to eradicate homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.
Speaking exclusively to OutNews Global, Silke Bader said, “New Zealand leads the world in its progressive approach to LGBTI equality, and yet many LGBTI people have problems at work, school and at home. Self-harming, eating disorders and even suicide are far more prevalent among LGBTI youth than in the population as a whole and, if nothing else, this tells us there is still work to be done.
“We believe that by shining a light on some of the great strides being made, we can encourage others to follow suit and move towards a fairer, more equal society for all, irrespective of who they choose to love.”
