Sometimes, when I should be working, you can find me arsing about on Soundcloud and Spotify on a quest for new exciting music to tell you about. I mean, who wants to read another article about Taylor Swift (we love her btw), Kylie (we really love her) or Adele (meh)?

Sadly, with modern pop music having been around since the dawn of rock and roll in the mid 1950s, it’s not always easy to find new music that’s truly unique.

Step forward queer songstress Amber Jay and her latest release Pencilled Brims. Yes folks, you won’t have heard anything quite like this before. The single is characterised by haunting vocals, a sound which is at once futuristic and with undertones of old-school psychedelia, plus bold changes of beat and rhythm which are always unexpected but never out of place. The result is a multi-layered track which demonstrates a musical maturity seldom found in an artist of such tender years. I loved it.

Amber explains, “Pencilled Brims holds a microscope over an initial moment of intimacy and how that moment almost becomes suspended in our minds, to be witnessed and analysed during and after the interaction has occurred. It highlights how in the action of intimacy there is a vignette-like experience around the event, allowing us to hone-in on specific details to extract their beauty.

“However, suddenly finding yourself tied within a person so intensely, can mean you lose sight of yourself and the perspective of the situation. The line between love and obsession becomes equally blurred and no matter how much you try and change a person ‘the nature of the beast never leaves its side.”
