Israel’s new LGBT rights bill to be named after teen that died during an attack by an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man at Jerusalem Pride.
Shira Banki, a 16-year-old high school student was one of six people wounded in an attack at Jerusalem Pride in Israel. She was taken to hospital but later succumbed to her wounds.
Ultra-Orthodox Jew, Yishai Schlissel, was arrested for the attacks, having been released from prison just three weeks earlier, after serving 10 years in prison for a previous attack at the same parade in 2005.
Tzipi Livni, a member of Israel’s Parliament, has put forward the “Shira Banki bills,” which, if passed, would afford Israel’s LGB population a number of protections.
The legislation would see civil unions for same-sex couples and add tolerance teachings to school curriculums, ban gay conversion therapy, ease surrogacy rules for gay parents, and establish a database of criminals who have committed hate crimes.
