weddingcakeOn Thursday The New Jersey Assembly voted 42-33 on a bill to legalise gay marriage, with an expected veto from Republican Governer Chris Christie, who opposes gay marriage.

Christie promised ‘very swift action’ if the bill passed both houses of the Legislature and called the legislative push for it political theatre.

The Republican Governor is instead in favour of putting the vote to the people of New Jersey. A recent survey by the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling at Rutgers University showed that 54% of voters were in favour of same-sex marriage.

To override any veto made by Christie, both the Senate and Assembly would need a two-thirds majority vote. Proponents have until the end of the legislative session to try and achieve it.
