southafricanThe murder of gay rights activist Noxolo Nogwaza has been labelled a ‘hate crime’ by Human Rights Watch.

Nogwaza was raped, stoned and stabbed to death on 24 April after a bar brawl in KwaThema in Johannesburg.

US campaigning group Human Rights Watch is appealing to police to pour more resources into tracking down her killer.

Although homosexuality is legal in South Africa, it is considered taboo by many and homophobic attacks are commonplace in townships.

In 2008, footballer and fellow activist Eudy Simelane was also killed in KwaThema. Although two men were given long prison sentences for her murder, police refuse to accept that her sexuality may have been a motive.
