zach_wahlsA speech made to the Iowa Judiciary Committee by Zach Wahls, the 19-year-old son of lesbian parents, has become YouTube’s most watched political video of the year.

The clip posted on YouTube shows the young man’s plea for marriage equality at a committee discussing the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

Wahls, a student at the University of Iowa, spoke of growing up as the son of two women. “In my 19 years not once have I ever been confronted by an individual who realized independently that I was raised by a gay couple,” Wahls told the committee. “And you know why? Because the sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character.”

After legalising gay marriage in 2009, the Iowa House passed the amendment, revoking equal marriage rights, despite the plea made by Wahls’ and many other gay rights activists.
