catoSydney Nsubuga, a man arrested as a suspect in the murder of Ugandan gay rights activist David Kato, has confessed to the killing.

National police spokeswoman, Judith Nabakooba, told Agence France-Presse that, although she hadn’t read the Nsubuga’s statement, she knew that he was confessing.

Nsubuga was arrested on Wednesday, just outside of Kampala, Uganda’s capital. Nabakooba said that he made an extra-judicial statement to the police, before making a formal confession before a magistrate.

David Kato, 43, was pictured and named last year, in anti-gay Ugandan newspaper.  He was murdered last week in his home near Mukono.

He had successfully sued the homophobic tabloid Rolling Stone (unrelated to the American publication), after they printed his name in an article with the headline ‘Hang Them’, which called for gay rights activists to be killed.

Kato publically spoke out against his country’s proposed Anti-Homosexual Bill, which, if passed, will increase the list of illegal “homosexual offences”.
