brighton_prideBrighton and Hove locals have been asked to vote to choose the final theme of the 2012 Pride event.

Locals must choose between two ideas for the September 1st celebrations; ‘The United Colours of Pride’ and ‘Triumphs and Tragedies’, two of the winning concepts sent to a competition run by the Argus newspaper.

‘The United Colours of Pride’ is an international theme, using the rainbow flag to raise awareness to countries where LGBT people face discrimination. It would give the event a political edge without detracting from the vibrancy of Pride’s colours and atmosphere.

‘Triumphs and Tragedies’ would similarly raise awareness to the plight of LGBT communities struggling for equality whilst also celebrating achievements won thanks to the Pride movement.

Pride Director, Trevor Edwards said: We were heartened to see suggestions including taking pride in our forces, public services and all things Britannia in this Olympic and Jubilee year. However the panel were looking for something that acknowledged the struggles and sometimes turbulent history of the Pride movement both around the world and here in Brighton & Hove. We think that the themes we have chosen do just that, whilst allowing for a wonderful burst of expression throughout the parade and park.”
