kasbah-coverLocal South London author Tony Walton launched his new book, “Up the Kasbah” at a Croydon Area Gay Society meeting yesterday.

The book follows a century of adventures lived by gay expats.

Tony Walton, introducing the book, said “England in the 1950s was not a good place for gay men, and many were glad to escape to North Africa for the sunshine and the freedom from oppressive laws, following in the footsteps of Oscar Wilde in the 1890s. Tangier in particular had a special attraction, as an international zone with a laissez-faire atmosphere. It’s fortunate that many of the expats who went to North Africa during this period were not just gay but literary, so the story is particularly well documented.
