This year Lily Tomlin will become the first out lesbian to be awarded a Kennedy Center Honor. She will be one of five recipients who will be recognised for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts.

Tomlin is well-known American actress, comedian, writer and producer. She began her career as a stand-up comedian, and soon moved into television, getting her big break as a fixture on the Laugh-In show in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Since then, Tomlin has appeared in various TV shows and films, including The West Wing, Damages, Saturday Night Live, Sesame Street, Desperate Housewives, Murphy Brown, Nashville, All of Me and I Heart Huckabees. She has also conquered the stage, winning Tony Awards for two Broadway shows that were created with Jane Wagner, Tomlin’s longtime partner whom she recently married after four decades together.

“From the days of her early television and theatrical appearances, Lily Tomlin has made us laugh and continues to amaze us with her acting talent and quick wit,” said Kennedy Center chairman David M. Rubenstein.

Tomlin is currently in production for Netflix series Grace and Frankie, in which she reunites with former Nine To Five costar Jane Fonda to play women whose husbands fall in love with each other.

The other four honorees are Al Green, Tom Hanks, Patricia McBride, and Sting. The ceremony will take place on this December, where the five stars will be awarded with a medallion before being honored with a star-studded gala the following night.
