The new leader of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron, refused to answer whether he thinks gay sex is a sin.

Farron has already been criticised in the The Times newpaper for his “illiberal” attitude on LGBT issues, citing his failure to “embrace the quintessentially liberal idea that every person has equal moral worth” and strong religious beliefs.

During an interview with Channel 4 News, Farron repeatedly avoided answering direct questions about gay sex.

When asked: “Personally, do you think as a Christian, that homosexual sex is a sin?”

He answered by saying that Christians “do not go around forcing their views on other people” – but would not say that homosexuality is not a sin. He later claimed “to understand Christianity is to understand that we are all sinners” – but again, would not say that homosexuality is not a sin.

When she challenged a third time with a direct quote from the Bible, Farron would not say that homosexuality is not a sin.

Farron did however, pledge to move forward with LGBT issues, including trans rights and an end to the gay blood ban.
