Organisers inspired by the success of the Women’s March on Washington.

Drawing inspiration from the Women’s March on Washington, a gay activist in New York City has announced plans for the National Pride March to send a clear message to those in power that LGBT rights are not to be threatened.

David Bruinooge, who created the National Pride March page, told the Washington Blade he specifically chose Pride weekend because of the mass of LGBT people who would already be congregating near the U.S. capital for Pride.

“I was watching the events unfold on TV and I was very proud and inspired by all the women, the strong women in our country who were kind of taking this to the street and getting their voices heard.

“And in the back of my mind as an openly gay man I thought the gay community should be doing something like this to follow up on the momentum,” he said.

The national LGBT March on Washington is planned for Sunday June 11, 2017 at 10 am, coinciding with Washington’s annual Capital Pride.
