Young newcomer Ruth Davidson has been elected leader of the Scottish Conservative party after taking her first seat in Scottish Parliament in May.

Prime Minister David Cameron congratulated her saying: “I am delighted to congratulated Ruth on winning this leadership election and look forward to working with her to strengthen the Union and build a better future for Scotland.”

Ms Davidson is the second Tory MP to come out as a lesbian, the first being Margot James.

Ms Davidson said: “The Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party is very much alive and kicking.”

“This is a time of generational change for the Scottish Conservatives, a party for all, regardless of age and of background.  I want everyone to feel that they have a place, a role and a voice that can and should be heard.”

Ms Davidson is taking on leadership after the Scottish Tories lost five seats at the recent national elections.  She will head a group of 15 tories at the 129-seat Scottish Parliament.
