The LGBT media charity welcomes lead singer of Semi Precious Weapons.
The writer behind hit songs for Selena Gomez ‘Hands to Myself’, Justin Bieber ‘Sorry’, DNCE ‘Cake by the Ocean’, and dozens of other artists – Justin Tranter – has been a prolific LGBT activist for many years.
Last year, after flying to Orlando to help with the aftermath of the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting, Tranter joined with frequent collaborator Julia Michaels and GLAAD to find a way to make a larger contribution. Through Interscope Records, and joined by many talented artists and the music community, they brought about the release of the charity single ‘Hands’ to raise funds for Equality Florida Pulse Victims Fund, GLAAD, and the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida.
“Justin Tranter’s impact on the music industry is far reaching and dynamic,” said Sarah KateEllis, GLAAD President and CEO. “By harnessing the power of song, he is able to share beautiful stories that change hearts and minds. Justin’s work on ‘Hands’ helped a nation cope with tragedy and we are honored to add his vision and voice to the GLAAD National Board of Directors.”
“Music is a big part of media and culture, so I thought I could really lend my voice and expertise,” Tranter explained to Billboard.
“I feel like there is a lot of homophobia and misogyny in the music business, and I feel like I’ve gotten to a place where I’ve broken down a lot of those doors.
“I’ve had the experience of going through homophobia in my work and I can share my experiences so future generations don’t have to deal with what I’ve dealt with.”
Leading fashion editor Ariel Foxman of InStyle and StyleWatch also joins the GLAAD board.
