Sources in the Belgian police are reporting that a high profile right-wing Hungarian MEP apologised on Tuesday for fleeing a lockdown busting sex party in the gay quarter of Brussels.
Jozsef Szajer, a longstanding ally of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, has resigned “for personal reasons”, having received a police caution after running from the party and found in possession of ecstasy once apprehended.
A spokesperson for the Belgian prosecutor’s office commented, “The man’s hands were bloody. It is possible that he may have been injured while fleeing.
“Narcotics were found in his backpack. The man was unable to produce any identity documents. A report was also drawn up for violation of the narcotics legislation.”
Szajer, 59, was instrumental in drafting Hungary’s constitution which includes a definition of “the institution of marriage as between a man and a woman” as well as “the basis of the family and national survival”.
Hungary, together with Poland, is currently at odds with the EU over their oppressive anti-LGBT legislation, with several towns declaring themselves “LGBT free zones” and police turning a blind eye to increasingly violent attacks on LGBTQ+ people.
Members of the European Parliament are immune from prosecution in Belgium so it is unlikely that charges will be brought against Mr Szajer, although the European Parliament is able to waive immunity on a case by case basis.
In March 2019, the European Parliament’s grouping of conservative MEPs, suspended the membership of Hungary’s governing Fidesz party because of their progressively more authoritarian rule, press crackdowns and anti-LGBT stance.
