Senior pastor of Jesus House Agu Irukwu who has been under fire for his outspoken views on homosexual equality has recently been voted Britain’s most inspirational black person.

In a poll organised by Metro newspaper and the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, Mr Irukwu won 54 per cent of the votes from a shortlist that included U.S. President Barack Obama, and Nelson Mandela.

Mr Irukwu sent a letter to a national newspaper which attacked laws forcing churches to accept gay people, and has faced criticism from campaigner Peter Tatchell.

In 2006, Mr Irukwu was criticised for saying the laws would force churches to: “accept and even promote” homosexuality, claiming they were affront to Christian freedom.

The competition takes place in Black History Month, which champions black culture every year and recognises the contributions made by black people to Britain.
