A High School newspaper has come under fire for publishing an article about ‘sinful’ gay adoption.
Shawano High School in Wisconsin has been criticized for displaying a form of ‘bullying and disrespect’ in the column posted in the student newspaper ‘Hawk’s Post’ The student who wrote the article quoted Bible passages stating that homosexuality is a sin that is punishable by death.Nick Uttecht and his partner Michael McNelly who have a child at the school, spoke about the article saying: ‘This is why kids commit suicide.’ They went on to call the piece hateful and said that they worried that the strong and hurtful language would effect their children and lead to the bullying of gay pupils.
Todd Carlson the Districts Superintendant said in a written statement that ‘Offensive articles cultivating a negative environment of disrespect are not appropriate or condoned by the Shawano School District.’
Although the school has apologised for the article, many are worried that there will be a lasting impact from the column.
The school officials have apologized and said that in the future, they will review the process of how the paper is edited.
