Bob Dylan, St Vincent, and Ke$ha reimagine traditional wedding songs for #UniversalLove album
Ke$ha and American singer-songwriter Annie Clark, aka St Vincent, are among a group of six other artists, including Bob Dylan, to be featured on the new Universal Love album.
A collection of reimagined wedding songs “celebrating the enduring and overwhelming power of love and music to unite”, the six-track album features a mix of LGBTQ+ and straight artists, and is available to play now on Spotify.
“If you look at the history of pop music, love songs have predominantly come from one heterosexual perspective,” said co-producer Tom Murphy in the New York Times over the weekend.
“If we view music as something that brings people together, shouldn’t these popular songs be open to everyone?”
Ke$ha chose Janis Joplin’s I Need a Man to Love, changing it to I Need a Woman to Love.
“For years I said that I’m not getting married until any two people can legally marry in this country,” Ke$ha told the The New York Times.
The 31-year-old singer-songwriter has since been ordained as a wedding officiator and performs a wedding for two women in the video for her contribution to Universal Love.
Also on the album, Bob Dylan has re-recorded She’s Funny That Way as He’s Funny That Way. St. Vincent – And Then She Kissed Me, Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie – And I Love Him, Kele Okereke of Bloc Party – My Guy, and Valerie June with Mad About The Girl.
