“By continuing to name their flagship stadium after a divisive homophobe, Tennis Australia is, in effect, endorsing outmoded and offensive views.”

The Australian LGBTI Awards have launched a Thunderclap campaign urging Tennis Australia, the governing body for tennis in the continent, to rename the famous Margaret Court Arena. Here’s why, as explained on their Thunderclap page:

“Sport has the power to unify, to break down barriers in society and to teach our children the values of teamwork, sportsmanship and grace in victory and defeat. By continuing to name their flagship stadium after a divisive homophobe, Tennis Australia is undermining these noble sporting ideals and, in effect, endorsing outmoded and offensive views.”

If you sign up to the campaign, at 6pm AEST on 10th July this tweet will automatically be posted on your wall:

So far over 190 people have signed up with a combined social reach of over 5 million. If you’d like to add your voice to the cause, then join the campaign now at tinyurl.com/divatennis.
