At least 222 out candidates are vying for your vote.

In today’s General Election, there are more LGBT candidates than ever before.

Literally hundreds of out candidates are vying for the public’s vote in #GE17. PinkNews reports that a total of 222 LGBT candidates are running for election. This figure doesn’t include independent and fringe party candidates, so the final number could be even higher.

Labour and the Conservative Party have named 42 out LGBT candidates each, the highest number ever for both parties.

The Liberal Democrats have 30 out LGBT candidates. Trans woman Helen Belcher is standing for the Lib Dems in Chippenham and may well be elected as the Lib Dems held that seat until just two years ago.

“Internal data” suggests the Green Party may have 86 out candidates, although only 11 have been identified publicly.

The SNP has 10 LGBT candidates, meaning 17% of their total candidates identify as LGBT.

Angela Crawley, the SNP Equalities spokesperson and candidate for Lanark and Hamilton East, said:

“I’m proud that the SNP has selected a record number of openly LGBTI candidates at this election – the highest proportion of any major party and the highest number in Scotland’s history.

UKIP has six LGBT candidates and Plaid Cymru, the SDLP and the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland have two candidates each.
